Dissociative Identity Disorder

Benson woke up drenched in sweat, heart racing and scared. He just heard a terrible dream and he was really afraid. He glanced up and quickly scanned through the room. He couldn’t recognize where he was. He looked over to the other side of the bed and there she lied, a lifeless body who had a knife stabbed in her stomach. Just then, he realized that he had blood all over him. His boxer short was half worn and his singlet had blood splattered all over it.
Benson jerked up and plastered himself to the wall.
“What the hell!’ He screamed. “Where the hell am I? Who the hell is this? What the hell have I done?”
Benson paced up and down, trying to remember where he was, or at least how he got there. He remembered getting into his car after work on Lagos Island. He remembered having dinner at his favorite restaurant. He remembered driving home He remembered kissing his girlfriend goodnight after which everything became blank.
“Stephany!” He thought. Benson quickly rushed to the other side of the bed to see if the lifeless body was his girlfriend.
‘Sharon?’ he muttered, shocked. ‘Why is my Matthew’s fiancé dead beside me?’ he thought.
Benson grabbed his phone to make a call, just as his best friend, Matthew burst in with two uniformed men and a medic.
“That’s him! He killed my fiancé and called me just after he did it!” Matthew shouted
“WHAT?! I DID WHAT? WHAT IS GOING ON?” Benson screamed, confused, scared and weepy
“You are under arrest Mr. Benson, you have the right to remain silent. Everything you say will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to a lawyer, if you can’t afford one, one will be provided for you by the government……” One of policemen began to read him his rights as he was being cuffed.
Benson could hardly hear what was being sad. He was scared.
“I have no idea how I got here! I am being set up! I DID NOT KILL HER!” Benson said frantically. ‘This has to be a dream. Someone please wake me up. This is a nightmare.’ These were the thoughts running through Benson’s mind as he was led out of the room by the policemen

“I told you to leave her for me but you refused. If I can’t have her, no one will.” Mike said “Can’t you see? I was made for her. She was made for me. She’s mine not yours! I had to kill her” He blurted.
Just calm down Benson. Matthew started. Tell…
“I am not Benson! My name is Mike. MIKE!” Mike shouted back, cutting Matthew short
“OK, Mike. Just tell me where you are.” Matthew said
“I am Sharon’s house. I just stabbed her.” Mike responded weeping, just before he passed out
Benson listened carefully to the phone call he made just after he stabbed Sharon. He could not remember. He had no memory of it. He couldn’t believe himself as he heard the conversation. He felt terrible
‘WHAT HAVE I DONE?!’ Benson muttered to himself as he dawned on him that he might actually go to jail for a murder he has no memory of.

Most of us have experienced mild dissociation, which is like daydreaming or getting lost in the moment while working on a project. However, dissociative identity disorder is a severe form of dissociation, a mental process which produces a lack of connection in a person’s thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity. Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), also known as multiple personality disorder is a severe condition in which two or more distinct identities, or personality states, are present in—and alternately take control of an individual. With dissociative identity disorder, there’s also an inability to recall key personal information that is too far-reaching to be explained as mere forgetfulness. There are also highly distinct memory variations, which fluctuate with the person’s split personality, referred to as the alters. The “alters” or different identities have their own age, sex, or race. Each has his or her own postures, gestures, and distinct way of talking. Sometimes, the alters are imaginary people; sometimes they are animals. As each personality reveals itself and controls the individuals’ behavior and thoughts, it’s called “switching.” Switching can take seconds to minutes to days. Some people describe this as an experience of possession. The individual also experiences memory loss that is too extensive to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness. Dissociative Identity Disorder is thought to be a complex psychological condition that is likely caused by many factors, including severe trauma during early childhood (usually extreme, repetitive physical, sexual, or emotional abuse).

Although, DID is not very common, it is real and it exists!
